Temper Tantrums

Temper tantrums may be way your toddlers to get attention or what they want. Sometimes, it may also occur when they are frustrated, over-tired, hungry or very excited. They may also imitate the people around them that have quick tempers.

Here are some suggestions on how to deal with your toddler’s temper tantrum (remember, each situation is different and depends on the cause for the tantrum):
* Remain calm
If you find yourself getting angry or irritated, take a few moments to calm yourself before handling your toddler
* Look for physical causes (for example, sleepy, hungry, sick) then correct the problem(s)
If there are no physical causes but just behavior only, then ignore the tantrum and deny your toddler the attention he or she wants However, do keep watch over him or her
Ensure that he or she is in safe place and can’t hurt himself or herself
* Intervene when your toddler bites or hits other children
Be calm and firm, make it clear this is not acceptable behavior
* A quiet place
If your toddler is having a tantrum in a place with other children or in a public area with a lot of people around, take him or her away and go to a quiet area or less crowded place You may also hold him or her in your arms until he or she calms down
