Creating healthy sleep patterns for you and your baby

Most expectant parents will have received warning from friends and family about the difficulties associated with having a newborn at home Sleep deprivation is definitely on top of that list  And as much as it is regarded as a normal part of becoming new parents, wouldn’t you want to avoid it nonetheless? Caring for a baby is a demanding task and being sleep deprived can add more stress tothe situation Being a new parent  is aspecial moment that  must be enjoyed soit is best to keep frustration and exhaustion to a minimum as much as possibleHere are a number of ways to manage and create healthy sleep patterns not onlyfor your baby’s sake, but especially for new parents

1 Acknowledge the facts Realize that babies have no notionof time so it is likely that you have to pull a few all-nighters until aroundthe 8th week As you spend time with your new bundle of joy, be observant andnotice your baby’s behavior around sounds or conditions, what are  the signals the baby give out when they are hungry, has soiled their diapers, andsleepy? Gather the information as you plan your sleep training techniques afterabout two months so the baby can eventually learn to sleep throughout thenight For this period, it is best to work out a schedule with your spouse orrelatives to avoid just one parent from burning out

2 Create a conducive sleeping space At nighttime, your role as parent is to set the right conditions for the baby to recognize thatit’s time to sleep and that sleep is something pleasant
First, determine where you want the baby to sleep, may it bein her crib in the nursery room, or in a cradle in your room Other parentsprefer sleeping beside their baby There is no set rule for where babies should sleep best But it is wise to guarantee that proper safety measures are inplace And once a space has been set, add on other features such as a lightnight lamp, music player and drapes to make the room conducive for sleepingtime These details are important as they help in not just making your babyfall asleep but help more importantly, keeps them asleep

3 Set a sleep association pattern that works for you and baby Find a cue that works best for you and the baby to signal that sleep isexpected But be aware that whatever pattern you introduce, your baby will be expecting it onwards So should you decide to nurse or rock your baby to sleep, get ready to do just that every night There are ongoing debates on what’s the best method to put a baby to sleep Others believe self-soothing is better wherein you let the baby cry it out and baby finds his own way to sleep This seems tough but many believe it makes the baby less reliant on a parent’s helpand thus saves parents from getting tired much Others attest to theparent-soothing method such as nursing or singing which will obviously be moredemanding of parent’s time and effort as the baby will require the parent’s presence every night time

4 Create routines and be consistent Setting not only a naptime but it’s duration and being consistent about it are believed to makebabies sleep longer at the evening Use this time to take that much needed restas well and avoid being tempted to  dosome chores while baby is taking a nap Some suggest waking up the baby bywashing her face with a warm towel should she be taking her nap longer than expected Infants are likely to be programmed as their developing brains arecompelled to recognize sequence that become patterns such as a warm bath, nursingor rocking So stick to a routine come night time and keep to your nightlyrituals and sleep association methods mentioned at #3 to set the baby to sleepAnd soon they’ll be sleeping throughout that night and save you from sleep deprivation

5 Help keep baby asleep Notice how your baby gets easily aroused from sleep from sudden noises and other annoying factors So always dress you baby accordingly as babies 8weeks to 3 months old still find it hard to regulate their body temperatureBabies will be restless as much as adults are when they feel too cold or toohot So be sure to set the thermostat as well as the humidity correctly As dryair can make baby’s nose stuffy and wakens him up Also find time to fix or oilthose door joints and other things in the room that might squeak and ruinbaby’s sleep And as mentioned in #1, you can opt to play soothing music orsounds throughout the night to induce a deep sleep and avoid the baby waking upand you from getting up
